Smart Safety Helmet
Design and Development of a Smart Safety Helmet for Accident Detection and Health Monitoring
This project was funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the INSPIRE Awards–MANAK programme.
Introduction
The Smart Safety Helmet is a promising development in workplace and road safety. It is equipped with sensors and a microcontroller that detect accidents and monitor the rider’s health.
Abstract
The Smart Safety Helmet project aims to prevent injuries and save lives by detecting accidents and monitoring the rider’s health. Equipped with sensors, it can detect crashes, measure heart rate, and send emergency alerts to contacts. This technology can significantly enhance safety for riders.
The integrated prototype combines accident detection, health monitoring, location identification and wireless emergency communication in a wearable safety system.

Motorcycle accidents are a major public-health concern. Many riders do not wear proper helmets, leading to severe injuries and fatalities. A smart helmet can provide real-time safety features to reduce risks and improve emergency response.
During an accident, the rider may become unconscious or may be unable to call for assistance. An automated detection and communication system can help reduce the delay between an accident and the arrival of emergency support.
Literature Review
The project document notes that smart-helmet systems can support road safety by combining accident detection, location tracking and real-time health monitoring. Automated emergency alerts may improve response time when the rider is unable to request assistance.
Research reviewed during the development of the project highlighted the potential of smart helmets to reduce risks and improve emergency-response mechanisms through integrated sensing and communication.
Aim & Objectives
The primary aim is to develop a wearable system capable of identifying a possible accident, monitoring the wearer’s health, determining the location and communicating emergency information.
- Develop an accident-detection unit that alerts emergency contacts.
- Incorporate a pulse sensor to monitor the rider’s health.
- Enable real-time GPS tracking for location-based alerts.
Proposed System
The helmet integrates accident detection, health monitoring and wireless communication into a single wearable platform.
Accident Detection Unit
Uses an accelerometer, GPS and microcontroller to identify a possible crash and initiate emergency alerts.
Pulse Monitoring Unit
Measures heart rate and blood-oxygen level and presents the health data on the display.
Wireless Communication
Sends emergency and monitoring information through GSM or Wi-Fi communication.
Scientific and Working Principle
The MPU6050 accelerometer and gyroscope continuously measure acceleration and angular movement. The Arduino processes these measurements and compares them with predefined accident-detection thresholds. A sudden impact or abnormal movement pattern can therefore be identified as a possible accident.
The MAX30100 pulse-oximeter module uses optical sensing to measure heart rate and blood-oxygen level. The NEO-6M GPS module determines the location, while the SIM900 GSM module communicates emergency information to predefined contacts. The LCD displays system data, and the buzzer generates local warnings.
Methodology
The development of the Smart Safety Helmet followed the steps below:
- Research on motorcycle safety and existing smart-helmet solutions.
- Design of a prototype with integrated sensors.
- Implementation of wireless data transmission.
- Testing in a controlled environment to validate system effectiveness.

Experimental Results
Accident detection was successfully tested, and emergency contacts were notified immediately. Pulse rate measurement provided real-time health monitoring, demonstrating the operation of the accident-detection and health-monitoring functions.
Conclusion
The Smart Safety Helmet enhances rider protection by detecting accidents and providing immediate emergency alerts. It also supports real-time health monitoring and location-based communication.
By integrating motion sensing, pulse and blood-oxygen monitoring, GPS and GSM communication into one wearable unit, the prototype demonstrates a practical approach to improving road safety and workplace security.
Future Scope
- Integration of an alcohol-detection system.
- AI-based road-hazard detection.
- Field testing and deployment in real-world scenarios.
- Mobile-application integration for health monitoring.
- Enhanced voice-assisted emergency response.
